As Harry Potter week comes to a close, filmhash looks back at our favorite moments at Hogwarts. Enjoy!
1. Hermione’s dress in GOF
This was a big signal for where the series was headed for the rest of the movie, and more importantly, is a great character moment between the three leads. Basically, Ron and Harry (but most Ron) discover that Hermione is woman, and an attractive one.
2. Ron playing chess in SS
Prior to this point, the main plot of the series had felt like Harry’s journey alone, with Hermione providing the research arm (like Willow in Buffy: The Vampire Slayer) but with this scene, we begin see that what separates Harry from Voldemort is his friends. They are Harry’s living family.
3. Harry getting his broom in SS
This moment really cements the part of the magical world we’d all like to inhabit. Rather than getting a bicycle or a car, who wouldn’t want to fly around on a Nimbus 2000?
4. Seven Harry’s in DH: Part 1
Dark times abound in the later films in the franchise, so humor is always a welcome reprieve. The opening scenes of the first Deathly Hallows film provides that with the use of Polyjuice Potion to disguise which one of the Order was the real Harry Potter. It was fantastic fun, and it was one of the best acting moments for Daniel Radcliffe in the series, as he was able to pretend to be different characters pretending to be…him.
5. Neville in DH: Part 2
Neville Longbottom may have a better hero’s journey than Harry when you think of the shy, clumsy kid he started out as in the first film. In the finale, he kicks all kinds of ass, and is basically the student leader at the Battle of Hogwarts.
6. Harry and Hermione dance in DH: Part 1
Quite possibly my favorite moment between these two characters, I distinctly remember tearing up during this scene which for those of you that don’t know is a rare feat for me. It was sweet, innocent, not at all schmaltzy, and just the perfect respite amidst the turmoil.
7. Weasley twins pull the ultimate prank in OotP
George and Fred were always destined for great things beyond the walls of Hogwarts and this scene finally gives them the grand performance, and exit, they richly deserve.
8. Snape teaching the students to duel in CoS
I chose this scene primarily because it has one of my favorite Snape quotes in it, but also because it shows the rival dynamic of the Slytherin and Gryffindor houses. “Weasley’s wand causes devastation with the simplest spells. We’ll sending Potter to the hospital wing in a match box.”
9. Oliver Wood in SS
I liked Oliver in the books, and he was definitely a cutey in the films-what happened to him?! I felt a lot of opportunities for humor were squandered in the earlier films due to his lacking presence.
10. Harry’s first animal patronus in POA
Expecto Patronum! is my favorite spell in all of the Harry Potter universe, and one that translates to film brilliantly. To top it off, this is a wonderful character moment too, especially because Harry didn’t even realize he was able to cast one until he did, in the future (or the past, time travel blah blah).
